Judges awarded the Olympic victory to Verde by a split decision.

The judgement came as a shock as Richardson appeared confident that he had done enough after the final bell.

However, it came as a shock when the referee said that Verde had won the clash.

And fans on social media could not believe it as they were sure that Richardson had dominated the bout.

One posted: “Lewis Richardson robbed of a final… dominated that Mexican lol.”

A second wrote: “Richardson robbed there. A close fight by all means but no way Verde edged it.”

A third commented: “Yet another complete mess in the boxing. Hard luck, Richardson. You were absolutely robbed. The scoring in this Olympics has been terrible.”

A fourth said: That is a complete and total robbery!

“There is absolutely no way that last round went to the Mexican on every single judges card. Lewis Richardson has been robbed!”

Another added: “Richardson absolutely robbed by the judges there. How on earth did he lose that fight by split decision?”

After the fight, Richardson admitted that he was “devastated”.

He told the BBC: “It is devasting. It is raw.

“Emotions are very high, and I am obviously disappointed to miss the final and box for a gold medal.

“Hopefully, I will look back and be proud and happiness in the future.”
