New York zoo mourns loss of long-standing animal residents

UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) -- The Utica Zoo is in mourning on Tuesday, August 6 after the recent passing of two of their long-time animal residents.

Zeke the zebu -- a subspecies of cattle from South Asia -- and Najla the Bactrian camel recently passed away at the zoo after 13 and 19 years there, respectively. According to the zoo, Zeke was recently euthanized due to age-related arthritis, while Najla passed away due to age-related health problems.

"It's unfortunate to have an older collection," Nicole Blance -- a veterinary technician at the zoo -- said in a statement, "but I believe it speaks to our staff's quality of care and diligent monitoring."

Zeke had been with the zoo since 2011 and was a resident of the Backyards and Barnyards exhibit for several years. In anticipation of Zeke's passing, the zoo introduced a young zebu named Ziti as a companion for Zack, the other zebu at the zoo. According to the zoo, zebu thrive in the company of their species, and both Zack and Ziti are coping well with the loss of Zeke.

Najla had resided at the Utica Zoo since 2005, and according to the zoo, was experiencing weight loss due to dental and age-related health issues. She leaves behind a habitat mate, a male by the name of Furlow.

Furlow is being monitored closely by zoo staff for any adverse effects of solitary life on camels. Staff are also working on a plan for the camel exhibit, as well as Furlow.

"Zeke and Najla, both senior in age and health, were beloved members of our zoo community," the Utica Zoo said in a statement. "The zookeepers, with their unwavering dedication and passion, provided them with excellent care over the years. The zoo understands the emotional impact of their loss and want to express their heartfelt gratitude for the community’s continued support for the Utica Zoo's staff during this difficult time."
