Yahya Sinwar appointed as new Hamas leader following assassination of Ismail Haniyeh

One week after the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas announced that Yahya Sinwar had been appointed as the new head of the political bureau of the group.

Jihad Taha, a spokesperson for Hamas, announced on Tuesday, August 6th, that Yahya Sinwar has been appointed as the successor to Ismail Haniyeh. This selection was made “after a series of internal consultations based on organizational frameworks.”

Ismail Haniyeh, the former head of the political bureau of Hamas, was attacked and killed last Wednesday morning in the most secure area of Tehran, the capital of Iran.

Yahya Sinwar, who has been appointed as Haniyeh’s successor, is 61 years old and is considered one of the main architects of the October 7th attack that fueled the current conflict between Israel and Hamas.

His selection as the head of the political bureau of Hamas has been met with widespread reactions.

A Hamas spokesperson stated that with this selection, the group’s activities “have entered a new phase of resistance.”

Hezbollah in Lebanon described this selection as a “strong and decisive” message to Israel and added that the appointment of Yahya Sinwar as the head of the political bureau of Hamas indicates that Hamas is “completely unified in its decision-making, resolute in its principles, and steadfast in its commitment to its core choices.”
