Tottenham insider explains the details behind Bryan Gil’s new contract clause
Tottenham insider Paul O’Keefe has confirmed that Tottenham have added a £15m release clause to Bryan Gil’s contract rather than giving Girona an option to buy the winger.
Bryan Gil moves to Girona
Gil completed his loan move to Girona a little over a week ago and the winger will hope to get his career back on track and prove himself at the Catalonian side ahead of their maiden Champions League campaign.
It was initially reported that Tottenham had accepted an initial loan offer from the La Liga side after the 23-year-old agreed to extend his contract with the Lilywhites (Fabrizio Romano).
However, this was subsequently rubbished by multiple sources, including George Sessions, who stated that no contract extension had been agreed.
The reliable Alasdair Gold also took to social media to make it clear that Spurs had announced nothing about any extension or an option/obligation to buy in the deal.
Bryan Gil’s contract extension and clause
However, O’Keefe has now clarified the situation, explaining that Gil indeed extended his contract at Hotspur Way even though it has not been officially announced, with the Lilywhites now protected by a £15m release clause.
He said on Last Word on Spurs podcast about the Spaniard: “The option is for anyone. It is a £15m release clause, not just for them [Girona], it is for any club.
“I think Tottenham, they obviously needed to make room because they wanted to bring in the extra winger and if that was the best deal that was on the table, then that’s what you do.
“Basically Tottenham have protected their fee because they apparently have extended his deal by a year, they don’t lose anything contractually.
“They have got a £15m release clause if he goes out there and does very well. If he smashes it this season, they’ll sell him for £15m and they’ll get that value since they’ve obviously extended the contract.
“Whether they announce that contract extension or not, but the word is that’s what is going to happen or has happened.”
Spurs Web Opinion
I would not be surprised if Gil tears it up at Girona next season, which is why it was quite prudent of Spurs to protect themselves by adding a £15m release clause to the player’s contract.
