2024 Emmy Predictions: Best TV Movie

Right before the 2024 Emmy nominations were revealed, more than two-thirds of the thousands of Gold Derby users predicting the event agreed that “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” was the Best TV Movie frontrunner. However, now that the Peacock production is officially up for the award, its win prediction rate has dropped below 56%, clearly illustrating the stark contrast between this top telefilm race and last year’s, when “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story” won with a Gold Derby support rate of 83%.

The “Monk” sequel film’s most formidable challengers are “Quiz Lady” and “Red, White & Royal Blue,” which respectively streamed on Hulu and Prime Video in 2023. Also in the mix are the Netflix movies “Scoop” and “Unfrosted,” either of which would bring their platform’s win total in this category to five.

In order to make sense of this tight race, let’s take a closer look at each nominee. Be sure to make your predictions in this and 30 other Creative Arts Emmy categories by September 7.

“Mr. Monk’s Last Case: A Monk Movie” (Peacock)

Peacock’s very first program nomination comes for this one-off continuation of the comedy series “Monk,” which aired on the USA Network from 2002 to 2009. Three-time Best Comedy Actor winner Tony Shalhoub and most of his former cast mates returned to tell the story of fastidious retired detective Adrian Monk agreeing to take on a possible murder case at the request of his stepdaughter.

“Quiz Lady” (Hulu)

Hulu’s third nomination in this category follows its dual 2023 ones for “Fire Island” and “Prey.” Having initially streamed last November, “Quiz Lady” stars respective two and 14-time Emmy nominees Awkwafina and Sandra Oh as estranged and highly dissimilar sisters who hatch a plan to resolve their mother’s massive gambling debts.

“Red, White & Royal Blue” (Prime Video)

Based on the 2019 young adult novel of the same name, this romantic comedy centers on the enemies-to-lovers relationship between a fictional British prince (Nicholas Galitzine) and the first son of the United States (Taylor Zakhar Perez). Prime Video previously scored bids here in 2019 (“King Lear”) and 2021 (“Sylvie’s Love” and “Uncle Frank”).

“Scoop” (Netflix)

The sole dramatic film in this lineup is also the only one explicitly based on factual events. Starring Emmy winner Gillian Anderson (“The X-Files”; “The Crown”) and nominee Rufus Sewell (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) as Emily Maitlis and Prince Andrew, it offers a scripted behind-the-scenes look at the two British figures’ 2019 “Newsnight” interview regarding the duke’s alleged history of sexual assault.

“Unfrosted” (Netflix)

Small screen legend Jerry Seinfeld wrote, directed, produced, and starred in this broad comedy loosely based on the creation of the Pop-Tart in the 1960s. Having premiered an average of five months later than the other nominees, it features a veritable cavalcade of comedians in marginally biographical roles, including Amy Schumer as Marjorie Post, James Marsden as Jack LaLanne, and Hugh Grant as Thurl Ravenscroft.

So, what will win the 2024 Emmy for Best TV Movie? The fact that “Mr. Monk’s Last Case” has no other nominations (not even one for Shalhoub) to set it apart from its fellow single-category competitors makes buying its runaway winner potential difficult. Plus, the show from which it originates was never even nominated for Best Comedy Series despite being eligible on eight separate occasions.

While it is worth noting that “Unfrosted” most closely resembles 2023 honoree “Weird,” its long Gold Derby odds, mixed reviews, and likelihood of splitting votes with “Scoop” simply aren’t conducive to a foreseeable win. Given its extreme general popularity, the news of its upcoming sequel, and voters’ recent penchant for feel-good telefilms, predictors shouldn’t be surprised to see “Red, White & Royal Blue” go all the way.
