Azuki Chair is a minimal chair created by London-based studio CP RV for Licht Gallery. Licht Gallery in Tokyo hosted a solo show featuring the recent work of CPRV, including the complete collection of KGT Wall Units designed for UTIL, the studio’s handcrafted paper sculptures, and the Azuki chair, created specifically for this exhibition. The gallery aimed to present these projects through their respective materials—metal, paper, and wood—highlighting CPRV’s material sensitivity and the intelligent, rational use of these elements in daily life. The exhibition layout drew inspiration from American Minimalism. The gallery owner, a fan of artists Carl Andre and Donald Judd, saw parallels in CPRV’s work.

Andre’s focus on repetition and Judd’s consistent use of materials influenced the minimalist arrangement of the exhibit. The title, “ranger, s’éclairer, se reposer” (to store, to light up, to rest), encouraged viewers to see the objects not as art pieces or installations, but as functional items integrated into daily living. The Azuki chair, crafted from wooden planks and incorporating storage space, was designed for the Tokyo exhibition at Licht Gallery. Inspired by the practical seating found in ramen bars, which often included a basket for personal items, the Azuki chair was both an experiment in design and a functional piece. It was available for purchase at Licht Gallery.
