A 14-Year-Old Skater Just Won Gold at the Olympics
The Olympics are great at making you feel inspired, making you feel proud, and making you feel old as shit. Never mind the announcers who speak about 29-year-olds as if they’re about to turn to dust, I’m talking about the actual children who are competing. There are several teens competing at the games this year — including the 16-year-old U.S. gymnast Hezly Rivera — but perhaps none of them are as sick as Arisa Trew, the 14-year-old skateboarder who just won gold in women’s park.

I know next to nothing about skateboarding, but that looked pretty perfect to me. Trew made headlines last year for being the first-ever female skateboarder to land a 720 (two full rotations in the air), so it’s not a total shock that she dominated at the Olympics.
Trew is now the youngest medalist at the Paris Olympics, and the first Australian woman to medal in this event. Joining her on the podium were two other teens: Japan’s Cocona Hiraki, 15, took home the silver, while Great Britain’s Sky Brown, 16, earned bronze. And would you believe me if I said these guys are years older than the youngest skaters competing? No, that title goes to China’s Zheng Haohao, who is 11.
My advice? Do not compare your achievements to those of the most talented children in the world. There are Olympians of all ages (up to 65) who can make you feel bad about your lack of physical strength and discipline. Pick one of them!
