NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) – A New York man was on his way to France on Tuesday when he was arrested at Newark International Airport for traveling with a gun, according to officials.

The Westchester was caught with a handgun and a magazine loaded with five bullets, according to the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

“When planning for a flight, especially an international flight, travelers really need to pay attention to the items that they have inside their carry-on bags,” explained Thomas Carter, TSA’s Federal Security Director for New Jersey. “Carrying a gun into an airport checkpoint introduces risks to everyone in the area.”

According to the TSA, passengers are allowed to carry firearms in checked baggage when traveling throughout the U.S. if they are unloaded and packed in a hard-sided locked case. The gun should be locked in the case and declared at the airline check-in.

In addition to being arrested, the man also faces a $15,000 fine. It remains unclear if the TSA will issue the penalty.

This is the 12th gun seizure at Newark Airport this year.
