Paris Olympics 2024: Antim Panghal’s Sister Tries To Enter Games Village On Indian Wrestler’s Accreditation, Detained By Police

Antim Panghal had slumped to a humiliating 0-10 defeat to Turkey's Yetgil Zeynep in the women's 53 kg category.

Paris: In another fresh controversy for India, wrestler Antim Panghal’s sister Nisha was detained by Paris Police after she tried to enter the Games Village on Antim’s accreditation. As a result, Antim’s accreditation has been cancelled and the entire entourage will be deported to India on Thursday. The police questioned Nisha and was later released soon.

“We are fighting fire as of now,” said an Indian Olympic Association (IOA) source. “We have a bad situation at hand, our security officer is dealing with the situation. They might be deported, let’s see,” the official source added. The incident took place when Antim asked her sister to go to the Games Village and collect her belongings. While her sister managed to enter the Village, she was caught by the security officer while leaving.

She was taken to a local police station to record her statement and the 19-year-old junior world champion Antim was also called by the police to record her statement. If that was not enough, Antim’s personal support staff — Vikas and Bhagat — have allegedly travelled in an inebriated state in a cab and refused to pay the fare after which the driver called the cops.

Earlier on the day, Antim slumped to a humiliating 0-10 defeat to Turkey’s Yetgil Zeynep in the women’s 53 kg category. The 19-year-old debutant’s hope of remaining in contention for a bronze medal via repechage were also dashed after Zeynep lost to Annika Wendle of Germany in the quarterfinals.

Antim, who was one of the first to gain an Olympic quota in the category earlier owned by Vinesh Phogat, was outclassed in 101 seconds in the first round. The Turkish wrestler emerged victorious by virtue of “Technical Superiority” where she had a clear 10-point lead over her Indian opponent.
Zeynep was in complete control as she first pinned Antim for two points, followed by another two and then performed a double flip to get four points. She completed the rout with another two points when the referee stopped the bout leaving Antim in tears. Antim becomes the third wrestler from the country who will return empty handed.
While Nisha Dahiya’s (68kg) campaign ended on Monday, the seasoned Vinesh, who became the first Indian female wrestler to reach an Olympic final in the 50kg category on Tuesday, was disqualified hours ahead of her gold medal bout on Wednesday for being 100 grams over the weight limit.
