East Topeka apartments condemned after carbon monoxide leak, raw sewage found

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Apartments in east Topeka were condemned Wednesday after "unsanitary conditions and a carbon monoxide leak" were discovered.

The City of Topeka announced it helped 18 residents after finding unsanitary conditions and a carbon monoxide leak at the Timberlee Apartments located at 313 SE Lime St. Topeka Fire Department (TFD) crews responded to the complex just before 1 p.m. on Aug. 7 on reports of a chemical odor. Firefighters measured unsafe levels of carbon monoxide and notified the Kansas Gas Service and the Topeka Police Department's Property Maintenance Unit (PMU).

Two juveniles were taken to a local hospital by medical personnel with non-life threatening injuries, according to the city. After the PMU's investigation, raw sewage was found and four apartments have been condemned. An investigation is ongoing at this time.

Topeka's Housing Services Division responded and is working with the residence affected to provide relocation assistance.
