Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Liverpool signing Anthony Gordon this summer remains a possibility. Albeit one that may be dependent on Newcastle first dropping the price for the England international.

The Merseysiders have yet to submit a bid for the 23-year-old wide man and fresh conversations between the two clubs have yet to take place.

“If they drop the price at Newcastle, that could still be a possibility, I think, for Liverpool in the final weeks on the transfer window. But it’s not something that I’m hearing is now really imminent, because there is still no bid to Newcastle. There is still no fresh club to club conversation,” the CaughtOffside columnist told GiveMeSport.

“So we have to see what happens in kind of domino players. But, at the moment, is not something really imminent and wealso have to respect Newcastle because they want to keep Anthony Gordon at the club. So,it’s not going to be easy at all, but the appreciation is 100% confirmed.”

Of course, it’s worth pointing out that Richard Hughes and Co. are, at the moment, engaged in a process to potentially land Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi.

The Spaniard is understood to be intrigued by the prospect of a move to Liverpool, despite having previously passed on advances from the likes of Arsenal and Bayern Munich.

Anthony Gordon next on the list?

Our sporting director had made clear that this would be a window defined by opportunism.

With Zubimendi, it seems that opportunism has combined rather neatly with the side’s needs in this case. A potential outlay of £51.7m (to meet the No.6’s release clause) represents market value and potentially fills a key gap in Arne Slot’s side.

The question remains as to where Liverpool might go next.

There’s no such release clause governing Anthony Gordon’s future and it very much seems that Newcastle are hellbound on keeping their top winger at the club for the foreseeable future.

Though, given the Englishman has already signposted he’d be up for a move to Merseyside (and that the club saw him as a saleable asset amid a near PSR crisis), perhaps there is an opportunity to exploit here.
