Think lazy is a bit harsh. He always worked hard but missed so many chances due to a massive lack of self confidence.

Agree with this, never before have I seen a player so drastically impacted by confidence.

It's all tied together IMO. He's got no confidence so he doesn't want the ball and doesn't want more opportunities to make mistakes.

If you joined a local team and within the first 5 minutes, you've already made two mistakes that lead to goals, you won't spend the rest of the game sprinting around demanding the ball. You'll hide away and hope the ball doesn't come near you.
