Manhattan Planned Parenthood clinic to halt abortions after 20 weeks

NEW YORK (PIX11) – The Planned Parenthood of Greater New York is shutting down some clinics and halting abortions after 20 weeks at its Manhattan location, the agency announced on Wednesday.

The agency cited the rising costs of reproductive health care and called the decisions "difficult" in a press release. The Staten Island Planned Parenthood clinic, along with three others, will close by this fall.

The Manhattan Planned Parenthood clinic will temporarily pause "deep sedation pain management," saying it can no longer afford to outsource anesthesiology services. The deep sedation pause means that the clinic's ability to provide abortions after 20 weeks is also on hold, Planned Parenthood said.

Patients will still have access to local anesthesia and moderate sedation for in-clinic pregnancy termination and IUD insertion and removal as needed, according to the agency. It will also refer patients looking for an abortion after 20 weeks to trusted medical partners instead.

Abortions are legal up to and including 24 weeks of pregnancy in New York state. After that, abortions are permitted in the event of health or pregnancy risks.

Planned Parenthood of Greater New York said it will push for higher reimbursement rates from Medicaid and private insurers to cover rising costs.
