Martin, who posts under @martindiy, wrote: “POV you absolutely hate this wall in the garden and wanted to do something with it for under £100.”

While many people have been using shower curtains to add a splash of colour to their gardens, Martin was against the idea and wanted to find a different solution.

He first decided to paint the wall completely black and then fixed three vertical fence rails to the wall.

This had the purpose of holding up 30 battens of wood – each 4.8m in length – which he screwed in place.

Martin then painted the slats in grey fence paint that he picked up from B&Q for £15.

The backdrop looked very stylish, but he wasn’t finished with the space.

He next bought an outdoor rug and readded his rattan furniture to create a chic sitting area in the garden.

Martin shared: “The new rugs made it feel so much more homely and nice under bare foot.”

Speaking to Fabulous about his project, the homeowner said: “I’d seen a few of the batten style fences made from cedar and I really liked the look of the horizontal slats.

“I wanted to try and make it cheaper as hardwoods were going to cost £500+.”

Thankfully he managed to achieve his goal on a budget, with the whole thing costing him less than £150.

Many viewers were highly impressed with his DIY work, with his video racking up over 500 likes.

One person said: “Looks lovely. Well done.”

Another added: “So jealous tbh.”

Well, if you’re looking for creative ways to spruce up your boring brick exterior without forking out a small fortune, one woman shared another idea.

In a clip shared to TikTok (@homesweethome_at_48), she could be seen simply hanging the ‘Set of 3 Indoor/Outdoor Metal Wall Screens’ onto the offensive wall.

The black screens, which feature an attractive floral design, retail for £32.99 at The Range, meaning they cost just £10.99 each.

Alongside the post, she penned: “This wall just gives me the ick!!

How to update your garden on the cheap

IF you want your garden to impress this summer, you've come to the right place...

Plan and Prioritise

  • Assess Your Space: Take a walk around your garden and note areas that need improvement.
  • Set a Budget: Determine how much you can afford to spend.
  • Prioritise Projects: Focus on high-impact areas first, like pathways, seating, or focal points.

DIY Projects

  • Build Your Own Planters: Use reclaimed wood, pallets, or other materials to create custom planters.
  • Create Garden Art: Use old items like tires, bottles, or cans to make unique garden decorations.
  • Pathways: Lay down gravel or mulch to create affordable and attractive garden paths.

 Plant Smart

  • Buy Seeds, Not Plants: Seeds are cheaper than mature plants and offer a wider variety.
  • Share and Swap: Exchange plants and seeds with friends or join a local gardening club.
  • Grow Perennials: Invest in plants that come back year after year to save money in the long run.

Use Free Resources

  • Compost: Make your own compost from kitchen scraps and yard waste to enrich your soil.
  • Rainwater Collection: Set up a rain barrel to collect water for your garden.
  • Mulch: Use leaves, grass clippings, or wood chips as free mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds.

Repurpose and Upcycle

  • Old Furniture: Turn an old chair into a plant stand or a dresser drawer into a planter.
  • Containers: Use buckets, tins, or even old shoes as quirky plant containers.
  • Pallets: Create vertical gardens or compost bins from discarded pallets.

Shop Smart

  • Sales and Discounts: Look for end-of-season sales or discounts at garden centers.
  • Second-Hand Stores: Find pots, tools, and decorations at thrift stores or garage sales.
  • Online Marketplaces: Check sites like Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace for free or cheap garden supplies.

Maintenance

  • Weed Regularly: Stay on top of weeding to keep your garden looking tidy.
  • Prune and Deadhead: Regularly prune plants and deadhead flowers to encourage growth and blooms.
  • Tool Care: Maintain your tools by cleaning and sharpening them to prolong their life and effectiveness.

By using these tips, you can give your garden a fresh, updated look without spending a lot of money. Happy gardening!

“We have been throwing ideas around on what we should do and decided these would help make it a little less of an eye sore for now as it’s next to utility which we’ve not started renovating yet…

“We have some ideas up our sleeve – I’m excited to start this project.”

The bargain buy features three slim wall screens which are a super simple way to add style, depth and dimension to your outdoor haven.

And, according to the online product description, the screens are quick and easy to hang via the handy hooks on the back too – so there’s no stress required.
