Indian skipper Rohit Sharma said that his team did not play good while facing Sri Lanka’s spinners in the 3-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. India saw a 110 run defeat in the last game in Colombo. On their chase of 249, Indian batters were bowled out for 138 in 26.1 overs.

Rohit also praised Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando as they controlled the field and made a good impact by playing sweeps, reverse sweeps and paddle sweeps. 96 runs by Fernando and 59 by Mendis made the game as they set the flow for the hosts as they made a solid 82 run before the second wicket. For their brilliant performance, Sri Lanka won the series by 2-0.

“They were constant with their sweeps, taking their chance. There weren’t lot of runs scored down the ground. They didn’t use the feet as much as we expected. It was about using sweeps and piercing that deep square leg and midwicket field. That is something we failed to do as a batting unit. We didn’t play enough sweeps, reverse sweeps, or paddle sweeps, and used our feet too much. That was the difference,” Rohit said.

“If you look at Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando today, they got a lot of runs square of the wicket. They were using the turn, and sweeping, making the fielder move left and right. They were smart with how they batted and we were not,” he added.

Jeffery Vandersay took six wickets in the second ODI whereas Dunith Wellalage destroyed Indian batting with five wickets.

“All in all, we need to admit where we have made mistakes, we didn’t dominate against spin. On suck wickets, you need to dominate a bit and the Sri Lankan spinners had consistently kept us under pressure in all three games,” Rohit said.
