Mets Minors Recap: Luisangel Acuña Homers for Syracuse

There were five games played across the four affiliates in the Mets system on Wednesday. The bulk of the scoring came in Syracuse, as the other four affiliates combined for only four runs. At the same time, a Brooklyn pitcher was able to put up a good amount of strikeouts and one of the Cyclones games featured a walk-off hit. Meanwhile, in St. Lucie, a Mets outfielder continued his rehab assignment. Find out how he did and more with the recap of the day’s action below.

Triple-A

Worcester Red Sox (51-59) 9, Syracuse Mets (63-46) 6

BOX SCORE

The Syracuse offense got on the board quickly thanks to Ritter picking up an RBI double in the bottom of the first. He is 8-for-18 with six RBIs in the first seven games of this month.

The other five runs for the Mets came in the third and the scoring was started by Acuña, who hit a solo home run to tie the game at two. It was his first home run since June 29. Despite the lack of home runs, he has a hit in eight of his last ten games.

  • RHP Dom Hamel (6.41 ERA): 3 1/3 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 5 BB, 4 K (46 of 86 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Sean Reid-Foley (0.00): 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, BB, 2 K (15 of 20 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Justin Jarvis (1-2, 7.11): 1 2/3 IP, 5.R (3 ER), 5 H, 2 BB (23 of 45 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Carlos Guzman (4.15): 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H (10 of 14 pitches for strikes)

Hamel was spotted a 6-2 lead after the third inning, but he could not finish the fourth due to allowing the first three hitters to reach base. The 25-year-old has walked nine batters in his first two starts this month. Also, it is the third time he has walked at least five batters in a start (first time since May 11). The six Syracuse pitchers who appeared in the game combined for more walks (9) than strikeouts (7).

Double-A

Somerset Patriots (53-48) 5, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (53-51) 0

BOX SCORE

The Rumble Ponies went 0-for-6 as a team with runners in scoring position and had five hits in Wednesday night’s loss. Jackson had one of the two extra-base hits when he picked up his 14th double of the year.

  • RHP Nolan McLean (0-8, 5.29): 3 1/3 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 3 BB, 4 K (44 of 69 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Nolan Clenney (5.18): 2 2/3 IP, 1 R (0 ER), 1 H, BB, 3 K (28 of 44 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Jeffrey Colon (2.13): 2 IP, 1 ER, 3 H, BB, 2 K (22 of 34 pitches for strikes)

McLean is still searching for his first win at the Double-A level. He was able to hold Somerset scoreless for the first three innings, but the Patriots finally got to him in the bottom of the fourth when the first three batters reached bases, culminating in a three-run home run by Elijah Dunham. He has walked at least three batters in three of his last four outings.

High-A – Game 1

Brooklyn Cyclones (49-54) 3, Hudson Valley Renegades (52-49) 2

BOX SCORE

The Cyclones had four hits in Game 1 of the doubleheader, but they got the hits when they counted the most. Tilien got Brooklyn on the board in the bottom of the first with an RBI single. Later in the game, with Brooklyn down to their at-bat, Reimer hit a walk-off, two-run single with the bases loaded in just his fourth game back with the team.

  • RHP Jack Wenninger (3.54): 3 2/3 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 3 BB, 8 K (47 of 76 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Jordany Ventura (3.86): 1 2/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, BB, 2 K (18 of 33 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Eduardo Herrera (2-0, 5.14): 1 1/3 IP, 0 ER, 1 H, 2 BB, 2 K (16 of 30 pitches for strikes)

Hudson Valley did pick up a run against Wenninger with an infield single in the top of the fourth, but the 22-year-old was able to wiggle his way out of trouble due to eight strikeouts, which is the most he has had since joining the Cyclones’ rotation. He has 111 strikeouts in 92 innings in his first full professional season.

Game 2

Hudson Valley Renegades (53-49) 7, Brooklyn Cyclones (49-55) 0

BOX SCORE

The Cyclones only could get three hits in Game 2 of the doubleheader. Reimer had the only extra-base hit when he doubled in the bottom of the sixth. Brooklyn ended up facing six different Renegades pitchers, with each Hudson Valley arm recording only one strikeout each.

  • RHP Jonah Tong (4-4, 3.63): 5 IP, 4 R, 2 H, 6 BB, 5 K (40 of 81 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Alfred Vega (27.00): 1 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 2 BB, K (18 of 29 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Jake Stevenson (6.94): 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, K (8 of 13 pitches for strikes)

All of the damage the Renegades did against Tong came in the second when they scored four runs, thanks in part to four walks. While the 21-year-old right-hander could finish five innings, his six walks are a new season-high.

Low-A

Bradenton Marauders (43-61) 4, St. Lucie Mets (34-68) 1

BOX SCORE

The Mets managed to get only four hits in Wednesday’s loss. They avoided being shutout when Mercado hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth. Marte continued his rehab assignment and had a single and a stolen base in the first inning.

  • RHP Saul Garcia (2-7, 5.60): 2 IP, 2 ER, 2 H, BB, 2 K (21 of 33 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Jorge De Leon (9.82): 2 IP, 1 ER, 2 H, 3 K (17 of 24 pitches for strikes)
  • RHP Irving Cota (2.25): 2 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 4 BB, 2 K (15 of 35 pitches for strikes)
  • LHP Gregori Louis (1.42): 3 IP, 0 ER, 2 H, 3 K (24 of 41 pitches for strikes)

Despite no pitcher throwing more than three innings for St. Lucie, the four pitchers combined for ten strikeouts in the loss. Louis finished up the game with three scoreless innings and has 11 strikeouts over his last four appearances (8 innings).
