'Change of heart': Trump reported to be 'likely' to come back to ABC News debate

Former President Donald Trump has been refusing to honor an agreement he made with President Joe Biden to have a debate on September 9, 2024, now that Vice President Kamala Harris has taken his place as the Democratic Party's nominee.

However, the Washington Post is now reporting that Trump "is likely to return to ABC News or propose a debate on NBC News with Telemundo," and sources tell the paper that they "expect his proposal in the coming days and potentially as early as Thursday afternoon."

Trump recently backed out of a debate with Harris and offered a counterproposal to debate on Fox News with a full -- and potentially MAGA-friendly -- audience.

Harris, however, slapped away Trump's offer and insisted that she would show up on September 9th whether Trump was there or not.

This put Trump in a tricky position as he would not want to give his presidential rival an hour of free publicity on a national TV network.

"The former president wants to debate next month, the people familiar with the matter said, because he believes he can take on Harris," writes the Post. "But people close to him have raised concerns about how he will handle being onstage with a Black woman, the people said."

Former judge Bob Vance Jr. speculated a reason why Trump would be eager to go back to the table to get debating.

"I suspect his falling poll numbers may have something to do with his change of heart," Vance wrote on Friday.
