Tottenham were interested in Conor Gallagher

Gallagher has been linked with a move to Spurs for the last 12 months but the Lilywhites look set to miss out on the midfielder, who is reportedly close to sealing a move to Atletico Madrid.

Several outlets have revealed that the La Liga club have struck a full agreement with Chelsea for the England international, with only the final details now being ironed out (HITC).

On Monday, The Telegraph revealed that Spurs had not even launched an offer for Gallagher this summer, explaining that the Blues preferred to sell their academy graduate to a club outside England.

Spurs wanted Gallagher on a free transfer

Romano has now explained that Ange Postecoglou’s men only wanted the 24-year-old for next summer and did not really seriously consider a move during the current window.

He said on his Daily Briefing: “Another big name on his way to Atletico Madrid is Conor Gallagher. The Chelsea midfielder said yes to the La Liga giants after a complicated saga that took some time – he’s now agreed to the contract terms and will fly for his medical.

“The verbal agreement is in place, but all still waiting to get all signed in order to feel finally safe on this saga, it’s almost ten days now.

“Chelsea will make a guaranteed €40m from the sale of Gallagher, so it’s a good sale for them, especially as they preferred to sell him abroad even though he also had interest from Premier League clubs.

“Tottenham wanted him for next summer as a free agent, but no formal bid was sent to Chelsea this summer.”

Spurs Web Opinion

It is possible that Chelsea were reluctant to sell Gallagher to Tottenham right from the start, which might have been why Spurs never really made a serious effort to sign the midfielder.
