WWII veteran and Troy native passes away at 99

Ignatius DeGenero, known as Iggy to family and friends, sadly passed away Monday night.

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Ignatius DeGenero, known as Iggy to family and friends, sadly passed away Monday night. DeGenero was a veteran and Troy native who fought bravely in World War II.

The courageous man was captured and held as a prisoner of war in Omaha Beach before being liberated 11 months later. NEWS10 was with him this past Memorial Day as he was honored by the CRAB Garrison in Troy for his heroism and service.

DeGenero was 99 years old. He leaves behind a wife of 70 years, four children, and seven grandchildren.
