Ben Archard (‘The Traitors’ director) on how ‘the traction around this series’ just keeps growing [Exclusive Video Interview]

The second installment of “The Traitors” exploded in terms of audience visibility and critical acclaim, and now director Ben Archard is “absolutely thrilled” to receive an Emmy nomination for his work on Peacock’s reality TV show. “It’s a really big deal,” he tells us about the show’s overall four Emmy bids. “The traction around this series and the chat on social just seems to have grown and grown … it’s great to have gotten the coverage we’ve had.” Watch the exclusive video interview above.

The show’s host is Alan Cumming (who also received an Emmy bid this year), and Archard calls him “a really unique choice” to emcee “The Traitors.” “From my point of view as the director, working with someone like Alan is an absolute dream,” he reveals. “Alan hits the mark every time. He knows his lines. He’s a true professional. But he also brings the drama and the character. Everyone talks about the incredible costumes he wears, and that’s become almost as big as the show.”

Archard submitted the Season 2 premiere, titled “Betrayers, Fakes and Fraudsters,” as his Emmy submission for directing. What is it about this episode that makes it a great example of his overall work from the season? “There’s a huge grand opening to the [second season], and that always sets the tone for ‘The Traitors,’ in my eyes,” he explains. “So you’ve got an amazing pre-titles, then you have this big procession as they come down the drive. It’s their huge reactions. It’s a complicated direct for me. It’s 20-plus cast joining from the get-go. It’s Alan coming in in a big arrival. And then on top of that, there’s all the other bells and whistles for the opening show.”

The director notes about the premiere, “For me, it felt like a really good microcosm of loads of different departments, and of course showcasing my directing to the best. So that’s why I chose that episode. It’s ambitious. It shows off the series in its huge, full glory.” He readily admits that the first hour’s round table is the “single most exciting direct” he’s ever done.

Also in our exclusive video interview, Archard talks about how he keeps the breakfast scenes refreshing for the audience, what he thinks of Dan Gheesling and Phaedra Parks as Traitors, and why the poisoned chalice scene with Parvati Shallow is one of the “most challenging” moments from the series. He then divulges what he can about Season 3 of “The Traitors,” due out in 2025 on Peacock.
