Topeka school zones activate soon as students return to classrooms

TOPEKA (KSNT) - Topeka drivers will need to be more careful leading into next week as the city's school zones are turned on for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Students in Topeka will be returning to their classrooms this month to get the fall school season started. Alongside their return to the city's schools, the city will also begin turning its school zone flashers back on to alert drivers of the need to slow down.

City of Topeka spokeswoman Rosie Nichols told 27 News there are 52 school zones within city limits, numbering a total of 93 flashers to help alert motorists. Each of these zones are controlled and monitored by the city's Traffic Operations Division. Flashers will be turned on for the following districts throughout August:

  • Aug. 12 - USD 501
  • Aug. 13 - USD 437
  • Aug. 14 - USD 345
  • Aug. 15 - Hayden High School
  • Aug. 21 - Christ the King School
  • Aug. 23 - Holy Family School

Nichols said city workers coordinate with each school district to turn flashers on for the zones each year based on the first day of each respective district. For more information on school zone flashers in Topeka, click here.
