Audi Changes Everything With All-New 2025 A5 & A6 e-tron

Audi has been a little quiet as of late, but that’s because the brand with the four-rings has been working on something huge: a total overhaul of its entire car and SUV lineup.

That overhaul begins here and now with the all-new 2025 Audi A5 and 2025 Audi A6 e-tron. Not only do these new mid-size luxury cars represent the core of the company’s overhauled lineup, they foreshadow more big changes to come. Much of the technology you see here will quickly sweep through the rest of Audi’s range.

Wait, What Happened to the Audi A4?

Part of the huge overhaul of Audi’s lineup involves changing up the company’s long-running naming scheme. The switch won’t happen overnight, but from here on out, the all-electric e-tron models will be sporting even numbers (4, 6, 8) while combustion engine models are odd numbers (3, 5, 7).

Under Audi’s old scheme, the A4 was a compact sedan, and the A5 was a compact car that came in three flavours: A5 Sportback (meaning a four-door hatchback), A5 coupe, and A5 cabriolet. But, forget all that. There is no more A4, or, at least not as we knew it. Under the new naming scheme, a future Audi A4 would be a small electric sedan, but, of course, now we’re just speculating.

Under Audi’s new naming scheme, the 2025 A5 sedan is replacing the A4 sedan. (Err, technically the A5 is a four-door hatchback but — to confuse matters further — Audi is not giving it the Sportback label). Confused? Don’t sweat it. All you really need to understand is what’s under the skin of Audi’s new machines.

The new A5 is a new beginning, and also the beginning of the end. The 2025 A5 is the first Audi based on the new Premium Platform Combustion (PPC), which will underpin a range of new gas-burning cars — including plug-in hybrids — but it’s also reportedly the last new combustion-engine platform the company will ever make.

The new A5 sedan is longer and wider than its predecessor. Make up your own mind, but we’re loving the new design language. It’s refined and clean, without being boring, and instantly recognizable as an Audi. Sadly, however, the gorgeous new A5 Avant wagon is not likely to land in Canada showrooms.

As for engines, we’re expecting a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (with variable turbine technology) that pushes out 268 horsepower. The new S5 will get a twin-turbo 3.0-liter V6 that’s good for 362 hp. Quattro all-wheel-drive will surely be standard equipment on both.

There are more huge changes inside as well. Yes, there are a lot of screens, starting with the all-new Digital Stage. It’s a wide piece of curved glass that sits in front of the driver and houses both the instrument cluster and central infotainment screen. Front-seat passengers have the option of having their own screen now too. As if that’s not enough, there’s also a larger new heads-up display, which projects information for the driver onto the windshield.

The new A6 e-tron family is based on the cutting-edge new Premium Platform Electric (PPE), which debuted on the Q6 e-tron.

Audi is claiming the 2025 A6 e-tron is good for a driving range of up to 756 kilometers, which is impressive if it can do numbers like that in real-world situations. Power comes from a huge underfloor battery that can be up to 100 kWh. Result? The A6 e-tron will offer ultra-fast charging and boast a mile-crushing driving range.

Standing in contrast to the brand’s extensive lineup of electric SUVs and the low-slung e-tron GT, the new A6 e-tron is the firm’s first “traditional” electric sedan. That said, it’s hardly traditional. Avant-garde styling grants the A6 e-tron an astonishingly low drag coefficient of 0.21, which makes it Audi’s most aerodynamic car ever. (Low drag = more driving range.) In other news: yes! There is a front trunk.

Inside, drivers will find a similar cockpit to the new A5. The all-new Digital Stage and other displays are running Android Automotive OS, with over-the-air update capability. An enhanced e-tron route planner makes trip planning a breeze, and the Audi Application Store lets customers download third-party apps — music, video, gaming, navigation, parking and charging, productivity, weather, and news services — directly from the in-car screen.

More To Come

We’re just scratching the surface here. Expect more details on price and technical specs on the 2025 Audi A5 and A6 e-tron before they both arrive in Canadian dealerships next year.
