I repaired my fried hair in a year using ‘dusting’ technique – it removes split ends and will make your locks longer

A BEAUTY lover has shared how she revived her fried locks in a year thanks to a special ”dusting” technique.

Finding your tresses covered in split ends can be annoying and affecting your confidence, especially if you’re desperately trying to become a real-life Rapunzel.

There are many reasons you could be causing your locks to split, such as weakening the tresses with bleach and other harsh treatments or even simply by using the wrong type of brush, one trichologist previously revealed.

Unfortunately, it’s impossible to fix split ends and when left alone, they will just get worse and worse, eventually leading to breakage and leaving you with shorter and even strands of locks.

But how to get rid of them without sacrificing the length?

Well, one beauty lover recently spilled the beans of a lesser-known technique that she swears by – something called ”dusting”.

Not a haircut or even a little trim, hair dusting is a method that allegedly removes split ends – strand by strand, Cosmopolitan reported.

According to Clodagh Egan, who fixed her fried hair in under a year, ”dusting cuts are single-handedly the most important thing you can do to manage split ends”.

The high street may be full of a range of products all promising different things – but no haircare ”on the planet will remove a split end”.

The only thing that does work, she claimed in the video, was sticking to ”hair dusting” and not the hairdresser, as ”99 per cent of the time you will ask them to give you a trim”.

This means that if you go to the hair salon ”every six weeks like you should be”, ”the hair that they cut off will be more than what you have grown in the last six weeks”, she explained in the video.

Your tresses, Clodagh warned, won’t ”grow any further” – or in the beauty lover’s case, the ”hair was actually getting shorter”.

According to the stunner, who regularly shares content on her platform, @clodagheganxox, it’s better to wait until you need to wash your locks if you want to give dusting a go.

”When you put products on your hair, when you wash it, sometimes they conceal your split ends and make them look like you don’t have any.”

Once you’re armed with hairdressing scissors, slide your locks down your hand ”and every time you see a little split end, chop it off”, she demonstrated in the clip.

”This way you’re getting rid of all the split ends – whilst retaining as much length as possible.”

To complete the ultimate hair makeover that will cost you nothing, simply go around your entire head and dust off as many split ends as you can see.

Clodagh’s short tutorial has clearly impressed many, as the video has racked up close to 150k views and dozens of comments.

One social media user was also raving about the technique, writing: ”This is honestly my favourite pass time recently, it’s weirdly satisfying when you find a split/broken hair.”

Another chimed in: ”I do this in between 5/6 months trims.”

”A hairdresser once taught me to do this but by twisting it in strands and the split ends stick out,” someone else wrote.

”Omg who has the time or patience to do this it would take forever,” a fourth reckoned.

What do the experts say?

Chatting exclusively with Fabulous, A-List Stylist and Key Opinion Leader at Jerome Russell Bblonde, Jason Collier said: “Hair dusting is a trend that has gained popularity on social media due to its promise of maintaining hair length while getting rid of pesky split ends.

”The technique involves trimming just the tips of damaged hair strands without affecting the overall length.

”It can effectively remove split ends by focusing on the removal of the tips of individual hair strands. This can prevent further splitting, which often travels up the hair shaft if left untreated.

”One of the main attractions of hair dusting is that it allows individuals to maintain their preferred hair length.

”By only trimming the damaged ends, the bulk of the hair remains intact, making it an appealing option for those growing their hair out.”

According to the London-based pro, ”regular hair dusting can help prevent split ends from worsening, which might delay the need for more significant trims”.

Hair dusting - step by step

Check out Jason's guide on how to dust your tresses.

Start with clean, dry and straight hair. If your hair is naturally curly or wavy, consider straightening it lightly to make it easier to identify split ends.

Avoid using heavy products that could weigh down your hair, as this might make the split ends harder to see. Work in small sections, dividing the hair into manageable parts to allow for better control.

Use the twisting method to identify split ends, twisting the hair tightly from roots to ends. The damaged, split ends will pop out of the twist, making them easy to see.

Use sharp professional grade scissors to trim extremely carefully, dull scissors can cause more damage by fraying the ends instead of giving a clean cut.

As you move from section to section, maintain consistency in how much you trim to avoid uneven results. Take your time and don’t rush the process. The key is precision, the right tools, and patience.

By following these steps, you can successfully dust your hair and extend the time between salon visits while keeping split ends at bay.

However, if you’re unsure about your technique or feel hesitant, its best to leave the scissors in the drawer.

The guru went on: ”If not done carefully, hair dusting can miss some split ends, especially those located higher up on the hair shaft, which might require more comprehensive trimming to fully address.

”Over time, if split ends are not fully eliminated, they can weaken the overall structure of the hair, potentially leading to more significant breakage and a need for a more substantial cut in the future.

”It is crucial to complement this technique with proper hair care, such as using heat protectants like the Jerome Russell Heat Protection For Straight Hair which will protect your straight hair from every day heat damage up to 230°C, leaving it sleek and shiny, avoiding excessive styling, and nourishing the hair with quality products.”

The Jerome Russell BStyled Split End Balm, £6.99 on Amazon, is a deep conditioner that nourishes the hair and reduces the appearance of split ends.

The advanced balm is enriched with pomegranate & turmeric to defend your hair against styling. Also allowing you to enjoy your long locks, leaving the hair feeling strong.

The success of hair dusting largely depends on the skill of the person performing it.

If done incorrectly, it might not be effective, or worse, it could lead to uneven hair, he warned.
