I tried every Rhode Skin product – here's what impressed me and what didn't

I've tried every product from Hailey Bieber's beauty brand Rhode Skin. Some of the products truly wow me, but here's what I'd skip.

I was really impressed with the Rhode Peptide Lip Tint and Peptide Glazing Fluid, but not every product blew me away.

Hailey Bieber first made headlines for her "glazed donut" skincare routine back in 2022. Frankly, I thought the concept sounded kind of gross. But then the model launched her skincare label, rhode skin by Hailey Bieber, and upon trying it myself, I hereby retract my initial statement.

Rhode's debut collection hit shelves on June 15th, 2022, and included three luxury products - the peptide glazing fluid, barrier restore cream, and peptide lip treatment. Each was designed to leave skin feeling hydrated and looking dewy at an affordable price point, between $16 and $30. Since its initial drop, Rhode has released three more products - a peptide lip tint, pineapple cleanser, and glazing milk essence. On June 20, 2024, it will launch its second color cosmetic, Pocket Blush.

If I were to narrow down my favorite Rhode offering, it would be a tie between the peptide glazing fluid and lip tint. While I love the glow and gloss each product provides, respectively, it's the way they quench my skin's thirst in minutes that really sold me.

A dermatologist's review of Rhode's ingredients

Rhode products are formulated with overlapping ingredients, like peptides and niacinamide. Board-certified dermatologist Rachel Maiman, MD FAAD, tells Insider that peptides are chains of amino acids that, in skincare, help boost collagen and elastin production to firm the skin and reduce fine lines. Niacinamide, she says, is a potent anti-inflammatory agent that helps protect skin against environmental stressors, like UV rays and pollution.

Other highlighted ingredients across Rhode products include marula oil, an antioxidant that Maiman notes is both anti-inflammatory and antibacterial; shea butter to soften the skin; as well as squalane and hyaluronic acid to lock in hydration. Because Rhode products are super hydrating, Maiman agrees they would be amazing for use in winter or for those who have or experience bouts of dry skin. Additionally, Maiman tells Insider these products should be safe to use on sensitive skin as well, as the ingredients "are non-comedogenic, and many have anti-inflammatory and/or antibacterial properties."

I've been using Rhode products for two years. Here's what each product is like to use.

Pineapple Refresh Daily Cleanser

Rhode's Pineapple Refresh Daily Cleanser won't make your skin dewy; rather, prep your complexion so it's a clean and smooth canvas for those glazing items. It's formulated with polyglutamic acid (amino acids linked by peptides, aka a rockstar moisture-retention ingredient), green tea extract (soothes redness and reduces irritation), and pineapple enzyme, which exfoliates and brightens the skin, and unclogs pores.

Similar to moisturizers, the facial cleanser market is saturated. But, unlike Rhode's Barrier Cream, I think the Pineapple Refresh is an exceptional product that stands out among the dozens I've tried. It gently exfoliates without harsh beads, is fragrance-free, and leaves skin impressively soft. It performs like a luxury product but retails for under $30. I'll be restocking once I've finished the tube.

Glazing Milk

There's a learning curve that comes with the Glazing Milk, but luckily, I cracked the code for you. The trick to applying the product so it doesn't feel tacky on the skin is to shake the bottle and warm a few drops of the product between your hands before patting it - not rubbing it - into the skin. Logerfo says this application method is key because the glazing milk contains Beta-glucan, a water-loving polysaccharide high in molecular weight that can feel sticky on the skin.

Peptide Glazing Fluid

Rhode's Peptide Glazing Fluid is an aptly named gel serum. I'd liken applying the lightweight formula to splashing my face with cold water; it made my skin feel hydrated almost instantaneously. This is the product that is going to give users that same delicious, glazed donut dewy finish Bieber covets.

However, if you want that visibly slick complexion, ignore the directions on the bottle that suggest applying one to two pumps. Instead, follow Bieber's lead and apply three to four (maybe even five) pumps for the ultimate glazed effect and some extra hydration. Just be advised that it makes the skin feel a bit tacky before it settles.

Barrier Restore Cream

I wasn't wowed by Rhode's Barrier Restore Cream, but I liked it. It's a lightweight formula that noticeably softened my skin, but it definitely needed to be coupled with the glazing fluid for me to enhance its hydrating effect. The combination visibly brightened and balanced my complexion. Used alone, it makes for a great makeup primer. It's a solid moisturizer if you're on a budget, but there are better options out there if you're willing to splurge.

Peptide Lip Treatment
The author holding a tube of peptide lip treatment.

The Rhode peptide lip treatment comes in four flavors — unscented, salted caramel, watermelon slice, and Rhode vanilla — and is described as a hydrating, plumping solution that can be applied day or night or worn under lip products. It's thick but not goopy and, in my experience, absorbs into the skin within a few hours.

I apply it before lights out and have consistently woken up with softer, hydrated lips. But note: it definitely works best as an overnight salve than a daily lip gloss; I wore it to brunch, and the shine was long gone by the end of the meal.

A note on Rhode's peptide lip treatments' absorbability: Dr. Jodi Logerfo, a nurse practitioner and dermatologist, tells Insider that although a lip balm can "prevent moisture loss and maintain lip integrity and comfort," they're likely to off quickly because lips have poor barrier function and low water-retaining capacity. Hence needing to re-apply again and again.

Peptide Lip Tint

The Peptide Lip Tint was Rhode's segue into color cosmetics and cleverly launched at the height of the lipgloss resurgence of 2023. What I love about this product is its color payoff. The pigments are subtle but stunning and range from ribbon, a sheer pink (my favorite), to espresso, a coffee brown - all of which look beautiful against fair and dark skin tones.

But don't be fooled by this product's wash of color; it's just the peptide lip tint dressed up. It hydrates and softens your pout, but the glossy finish is short-lived and gone within an hour. Still, the tint is so pretty that I don't mind needing to touch it up.

Pocket Blush

Blush is having a moment in the beauty space right now, so Rhode's Pocket Blush launch is aptly timed. It's a cream formula packaged in stick form. There are six color options (piggy, juice box, spicy marg, freckle, sleep girl, and toasted teddy). When you first apply them to the skin, the color appears highly pigmented, but I've found the color payoff gets lighter the more you blend, so I layer it on according to how I like it.

The bottom line
The Rhode skincare collection.

I had high expectations for Rhode Skin by Hailey Bieber. Some of them were met, and some of them were not. While my favorite product was, by far, the Peptide Glazing Fluid, I had to use a significant amount of product before my complexion resembled anything like a glazed donut (and even then, it looked nothing like Bieber's photos).

The tinted version of the Peptide Lip Treatment, however, delivered in the shine department. It had a nice sheen and a beautifully subtle color payoff that made my lips feel soft and hydrated by morning. I could take or leave the Barrier Restore Cream. It was priced affordably and made my skin feel nice, but it was underwhelming compared to the other products in Bieber's collection.
