'Deadpool' Writers Reveal 1 Original Avenger Who Turned Down Cameo, Scrapped Plan to Reunite Core 6 for Iconic Scene

Two of the six original members of the Avengers appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine. However, there were plans to recruit the full team for Marvel‘s latest blockbuster.

In a new interview, Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick opened up about a scrapped scene that would have reunited the core group of Earth’s mightiest heroes.

They also revealed that one of the stars turned down Ryan Reynolds‘ offer to appear in the movie and explained the decision.

Speaking to Indie Wire, the pair explained that Ryan got in touch with Robert Downey Jr. to appear alongside Jon Favreau in one of the earliest scenes.

In fact, they even wrote it into the script at one point.

Ryan Reynolds read the scene with both of them, so in the hopes we could get Downey. But he also wanted Favreau, because they’re a great combo, and they were all in the scene together,” Rhett recalled.

Paul said that they all wondered how Robert turned down Ryan, only to realize that it was because he was playing Doctor Doom in forthcoming Avengers movies.

What would the scene have looked like?

“It was a version of what you saw in the sense that he rejected Wade. He just said he wasn’t a team player or whatever and questioned his team-player abilities. So it was actually pretty close to the scene that you saw,” Rhett said. “It just had two guys instead of one.”

“Very, very early” on in the creative process, the writers even imagined that scene uniting all six of the Avengers – Robert, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner and Mark Ruffalo.

“And Wade was rejected and then he dressed all the Avengers down in a way only Deadpool could do,” Paul explained with Rhett adding that he was “going to get mad and basically attack each one of them in a vicious kind of way.”

Of course, this didn’t happen. Both Hemsworth and Evans made cameos in the movie – the Thor star using archival footage and the Captain America actor playing his original Marvel hero the Human Torch.

Rhett said that they played of Evans‘ return, making it seem like he was back as Cap before revealing the Torch.

“Yeah. I mean, there’s that one moment where Captain America — or, well, who you think is Captain American is actually Johnny Storm — I think he drops an F-bomb. He swears, and Deadpool kind of clocks it for a second. He looks at him like, ‘What?’ It’s the first clue that it might not be the square-jawed Captain America that we’re used to,” he said. “It could have been a different Captain America, or in this case, it turned out to be Johnny Storm. But that was the first clue that maybe it’s not the sacred timeline Cap whom we’ve grown to know and love.”

Ryan revealed another big star that he contacted about a cameo, which didn’t work out.
