Opelousas woman charged with attempted murder, arson in connection with May house fire

Jeniffer Ruiz, 36, of Opelousas is charged with attempted second-degree murder, aggravated arson, domestic abuse battery (child endangerment), domestic abuse aggravated assault (child endangerment).

OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- An Opelousas woman accused of setting a house on fire with people inside in May has been arrested, authorities said.

Jeniffer Ruiz, 36, of Opelousas was booked into the St. Landry Parish Jail on charges of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated arson, domestic abuse battery (child endangerment), domestic abuse aggravated assault (child endangerment).

The Louisiana Office of State Fire Marshal said Ruiz allegedly set fire to a house May 4 in the 200 block of Magnolia Street in Opelousas during a domestic dispute while six people including Ruiz and four children, were inside.

According to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff's Office, Ruiz was arguing with her husband about the children's school attendance and care while she was hospitalized. The argument turned physical and Ruiz set a fire in the dining room. Ruiz and the children left the scene by the time police arrived, authorities said.

Bond details were not released.
