‘Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes’ Swings Up the Streaming Top 10 After Hulu Debut | Charts

The latest “Apes” installment sends Hulu to No. 2, just behind Max's “House of the Dragon”

With all of the choices that streaming provides to viewers, there’s a widespread belief that we’ve come to the end of the era of monoculture, where a mass TV audience watches the same program at the same time. “House of the Dragon” seems to buck this trend, as the HBO and Max series’ Season 2 finale perches the show atop the streaming chart once again.

Chasing the tail of the “Dragon” this week is a crop of theatrical releases and feature films. “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” swings into second this week after being added to Hulu on Aug. 2. The latest installment of the simian series hit movie theaters barely more than three months before it began its streaming run. It’s followed by “Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire,” last week’s No. 2 and another 2024 theatrical release.

Joining the migration of films from the big to the small screen are the action film “Land of Bad” at No. 5, the animated “Trolls Band Together” (a 2023 release) at No. 6 and “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” at No. 8. The final film is notable for making the chart as a VOD selection a mere two months after it hit theaters.

The rest of the chart has something for everyone. “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” is an adaptation of the popular YA novel, and that built-in audience put it in fourth place this week. “Find Me Falling” is a Netflix romcom starring Harry Connick Jr. “Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam” is a docuseries that looks at the life of Lou Pearlman, the music mogul behind the boy band explosion of the early 2000s. It’s the ninth most-watched program this week. No. 10 is the Paramount+ series “Mayor of Kingstown,” which aired its season finale on August 4.

It’s a sleepy linear chart this week as most networks likely ceded the airwaves to the Olympics on NBC (The Wrap Report omits sports coverage from its viewership data). A whopping five airings of Wheel of Fortune – all reruns – made the list, including taking the top spot. That leads a chart chock full of game shows and reality programming, with old favorites like “The Bachelorette” (No. 2) “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” (No. 5), “America’s Funniest Home Videos” (No. 6) and “The Price is Right” (No. 9 and No. 10).

The Wrap Report provides an exclusive first look at the most watched movies and TV series from the past week across both streaming and linear television sourced from viewership trends collected from Samba TV’s panel of more than 3 million households, balanced to the U.S. Census.
