An American Airlines airplane that departed Dallas for Madrid made an expected landing in the US after a bathroom overflowed.

Due to the overflow, the plane was forced to land in John F Kennedy Airport in New York around 10.30pm on Wednesday instead of continuing across the Atlantic to Spain, stated the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

American Airlines did not immediately state that the issue was the restroom, and instead said that flight 36 was ‘diverted’ to New York ‘due to a maintenance issue’.

The plane landed safely and passengers were reportedly accommodated with hotels.

American Airlines later confirmed that the issue surrounded a bathroom sink, the New York Post reported.

‘The aircraft landed normally and is scheduled to re-depart (Thursday) evening on a new aircraft,’ stated the airline.

‘We never want to disrupt our customers’ travel plans and apologize for the inconvenience.’

The incident is under investigation by the FAA.

It is the latest instance of a flight getting diverted due to a non-mechanical issue.

In early July, a Delta Airlines flight that departed from Detroit for Amsterdam also made an emergency landing at John F Kennedy International Airport after passengers were served ‘contaminated food’.

‘A portion of the Main Cabin in-flight meal service were spoiled,’ a Delta spokesperson said.

Medical crews and ambulances were at the tarmac waiting for flight 136 to arrive and treat any sickened customers or crew members.

Delta’s Food Safety team immediately contacted its suppliers to ‘isolate the product’ and investigate the incident.

‘This is not the service Delta is known for and we sincerely apologize to our customers for the inconvenience and delay in their travels,’ stated the spokesperson.
