He just drops this on us in new single, “Why Why Why.”
Now that he’s emerged from the woods with new music, Shawn Mendes has to catch us up on a few things. And he’s starting with a bombshell on new single “Why Why Why.” “I thought I was about to be a father,” Mendes sings. “Shook me to the core, I’m still a kid.” Um, what?! Mendes drops the revelation out of nowhere in the bridge of a song about his anxiety, a breakup, and canceling his 2022 tour. And by the end of it, we’re the ones asking why, why, why. Like, when? What happened? Who is she and is she okay?? (And don’t look for any answers in his ex Camila Cabello’s no-thoughts-just-vibes new album C,XOXO.) “It felt like I crossed a big threshold,” Mendes told Apple Music of his honesty in his new music. “I think it feels just really liberating even just to be in a space where I’ve done that as a writer. Now I feel more free to do that as a human.” Good for him, but maybe give us a little more to go off of next time?
