Mum-of-two, 29, flew to UK from Canada with more than 70kg of drugs in suitcase before being caught at airport
A MUM-of-two who flew to the UK from Canada with more than 70kg of drugs in suitcases was arrested at the airport.
Alisha Tworuschka, 29, landed at Manchester Airport on May 10 with Jacqueline Desorcy.
Tworuschka then left her drug laden luggage with Desorcy as the women made their way through customs.
She returned after hearing an announcement on the PA system. Border Force officers had spotted the women with the large haul of luggage, and decided to question them.
It was then established that the four suitcases contained 72 kilos of cannabis.
The pair were arrested and later pleaded guilty to the fraudulent evasion of a prohibition on the importation of cannabis.
The two women, both 29, were both jailed for a year and 10 months.
Sending the women down during a hearing at Manchester Crown Court, Judge Patrick Field KC said: “What you did was to agree to fly almost halfway around the globe from your homes in British Colombia to Manchester, via Toronto, in order to carry a total of 72 kilos of cannabis.
“You are each intelligent and hard working young women with stable homes and loving families in Canada.
“Your agreement to act as drug couriers amounts in both of your cases as a monumental error of judgement.
“That may well have been made through vulnerability or naivety on your part.
“But set against the evidence that I have read and heard about your background, it is very difficult to comprehend how you could make such decisions.
“It may well be that the enticement of a free holiday in the UK swung the balance.”
Wayne Jackson said Tworuschka’s behaviour was ‘completely out of character’.
He added: “Perhaps some people would be out of the building very quickly, but she wasn’t.”
The young mum, active on social media, made a final post on April 14 when she posted a selfie pic with the message: “How many times I gotta tell you that you’re alright.”
In January she posted another selfie pic with the message: “Chasing highs.”
Defending Desorcy, Brendan O’Leary said that the defendant is a massage therapist who set up her own business.
Mr O’Leary said that she suffered a ‘traumatic event’ in her life which led to mental health struggles.
