Drivers baffled by ‘incomplete’ road signs that don’t appear to say anything – do you know what they mean?

DRIVERS have been left baffled by seemingly “incomplete” blank road signs – but can you tell what they mean?

Failing to comply with the unusual signage could see you slapped with a £100 fine.

Motoring experts from insurance company Marshmallow has urged Brits to familiarise themselves with some of the lesser-spotted symbols that might pop up while on a summer trip.

Some of the most unique examples of these are a pair of signs which might, to the untrained eye, “look incomplete”.

First of all, drivers have to watch out for a sign with a blank white background surrounded by a red circle.

It looks almost exactly like a speed limit sign would if it were missing its numbers.

However, as with all red circle signs, it indicates that a particular action is forbidden.

In the case of a speed limit sign that is, as you might imagine, breaking the speed limit.

But when the sign is blank it actually suggests a “no vehicles” rule meaning, as the name suggests, that no vehicle of any kind can travel down the road it protects.

A more common variant of the sign contains an illustration of a car and motorbike, meaning no motor vehicles are allowed.

When it is blank, though, this ban is expanded to include buses and any other vehicle category, with only bicycles permitted.

Marshmallow also warned of a triangular sign with a similar red outline and blank white background.

These are sometimes seen with arrows or the words “give way” inside the triangle, showing which direction of travel is given priority.

When it is blank, though, it simply means that the person approaching the sign must give way to any oncoming vehicle.

A Marshmallow spokesperson said: “Ignoring this sign can lead to fines, which can range from £50 to £100, depending on the location and enforcement.”

The latter sign could also carry three penalty points if missed.

It comes after an Audi driver received a harsh “reality check” after braking suddenly in front of a truck.
