Many forget that Prince William and Catherine, Princess of Wales (better known as Kate Middleton) started their romance in college, and it remained shrouded in mystery for some time. However, the pair seemingly wanted the secrecy to last longer, but one of William’s exes spilled the beans.

In Robert Jobson’s upcoming book, Catherine, the Princess of Wales: A Biography of the Future Queen, he claimed that “a revealing moment occurred during a dinner party with friends attended by Carly Massy-Birch.” Massy-Birch is an ex-girlfriend of Prince William’s, and a group of them, including her, William, and Kate played the popular drinking game of “Never Have I Ever,” which is a game that encourages people to discuss what experiences they have or haven’t done.

“Perhaps unwittingly, Carly exposed William’s secret love affair with Catherine, much to the prince’s chagrin,” Jobson said in his upcoming book.

And this isn’t the first time we’ve heard these claims.

In The Making of a Royal Romance by Katie Nicholl, she describes how during the game, when it was Massy-Birch’s turn, she announced, “‘I’ve never dated two people in this room,’ knowing full well that William was the only one who had because Kate was sitting next to him.”

The source told Nicholl that everyone was “in shock” from this and that William looked quite angry, muttering, “I can’t believe you just said that.”

Now, who is Carly Massy-Birch?

Well, she and William were together for about “six or seven weeks when they first arrived at St Andrews,” per her parents.

“I’m a real country bumpkin,” Massy-Birch later said, via Katie Nicholl in Vanity Fair, when discussing why she and William got along so well. “I think that was why we had a connection. William was in the year below, and we just happened to meet through the general St. Andrews melee. It’s such a small place that it was impossible not to bump into William, and after a while, there was nothing weird about seeing him around. We got on well, but I think we would have got on well even if nothing had been going on romantically. It was very much a university thing, just a regular university romance.”

They reportedly dated just for his first semester on campus at St. Andrews University.

Despite this turn of events, Massy-Birch attended Kate and William’s royal wedding in 2011, and they reportedly get along, per DailyMail.
