Hotel expert reveals the huge mistake guests always make with towels in their rooms – and it could land you in trouble

AN etiquette expert has revealed exactly what hotel guests can do to avoid creating more work for staff.

Daily housekeeping is the luxury that comes with staying in a hotel, but the hotel staff’s hardwork should not be taken for granted.

Etiquette experts Myka Meier and Dianne Gottsman told Travel + Leisure what hotel guests can do to help.

“Never leave wet towels on the carpet or furniture, as it could damage wood or fabric and leave wet stains (or cause mildew) on carpet that may not dry in time for the next guest,” explains Meier.

Instead, she recommends hanging used towels or leaving them “neatly piled in the bathroom.”

Another way to avoid stains is not to use the dressing gown as a tissue or makeup wipe. Gottsman explains that although they can be washed, some stains are tough to remove.

Accidents can happen, but if this accident involves anything sharp, like smashed glass, Gottsman says picking up as many pieces as possible will help staff and avoid anyone getting hurt.

Plus, all the rubbish can go in the bins provided.

Leaving belongings in designated areas is another great way to help staff clean around your things.

Gottsman says to leave dirty towels in one corner, shoes put together in a corner, and clothes in your suitcase.

The bed however, does not have to be made when guests checkout.

“The bed will be immediately stripped, so you don’t have to worry about making it” says Meier.

Another way to make the lives of the hotel staff just that little bit easier is to call them when you are finished with your room service dishes.

Leaving them outside your room could cause a tripping hazard or an unwelcome smell.

At the end of the day, as long as all appliances and furniture are put back where you found them, it makes all the difference to the hotel staff.
