Man Utd player ratings vs Man City: Garnacho exciting but Rashford disappoints

Manchester United lost to Manchester City in the FA Community Shield through penalties (6-7).

The cagey clash uplifted in the second half when both managers made substitutions.

Alejandro Garnacho broke the deadline with just eight minutes remaining in the clock.

Man United failed to hold on to the lead with Bernardo Silva levelling the score with a superb header.

The Portuguese international missed from the spot, giving United the penalty advantage.

However, Jadon Sancho and Jonny Evans missed their chances handing Man City the bragging rights.

Player Ratings

Andre Onana – 6/10

He remained rooted to his line when Bernardo Silva put the ball behind late in the game but denied him with a good save from the spot.

Diogo Dalot – 5/10

Dalot’s lack of preseason was glaringly obvious as Jeremy Doku danced circles around him on the right flank.

The problems persisted even when he was switched to the opposite side in the second half.

Harry Maguire – 7/10

The England international was the best United defender today. His ball distribution caught the attention as he misplaced only three of his 50 passes.

Jonny Evans – 5/10

He had a mediocre display and capped off his evening with a terrible penalty at the decisive moment.

Lisandro Martinez – 6/10

Martinez struggled in the left-back role, looking uneasy and like someone trying to fill in for the injuries. His performance regained its familiar solidity after he moved to his favoured centre-back berth.

Casemiro – 7/10

The veteran midfielder proved to be a creative asset, making two key passes that could have resulted in goals. He also made seven tackles and two clearances.

Kobbie Mainoo – 6/10

The starlet eased his way back into the team but more would be expected of him during this campaign.

Mason Mount – 4/10

Not the best way to kick off the season. The former Chelsea ace made only nine passes in his 58-minute stay on the pitch.

Marcus Rashford – 4/10

Rashford must be disappointed with himself after missing two great chances to score on either side of the half. Not an ideal start for the 26-year-old.

Amad Diallo – 7/10

Diallo is ready for his breakthrough season at Old Trafford. He was United’s most threatening asset in the first half but must learn to be more selfish in the final third.

Bruno Fernandes – 8/10

The United captain scored a sublime goal but it was correctly ruled offside. He was rewarded for his good performance with an assist to Garnacho.

Substitutes

Alejandro Garnacho – 9 /10

A great start to the 2024/25 campaign for the Argentinian.

His breathtaking pace caused problems and created the best chance for United but Rashford delivered a disappointing finish.

He took responsibility and gave United the lead in the 82nd minute.

Toby Collyer – 6/10

The youngster exudes industry and might be the standout discovery of the new season.

Scott McTominay – 4/10

The Scotland international should have passed the ball to Garnacho when Fernandes found him smartly.

He had a massive opportunity to put the ball behind the net but astonishingly missed from six yards.

Facundo Pellistri – 5/10

The youngster was deployed in the unfamiliar right-back role and was beaten by Silva to score the equaliser for City.

Jadon Sancho – 4/10

One of two United players who failed to convert from the spot.
