'Insecurity is staggering': Elections writer says GOP's new Walz attack is a 'compliment'

Republicans' latest attempts to attack Vice President Kamala Harris' running mate, Tim Walz, actually amount to a compliment, an elections opinion writer said on Saturday.

Walz has come under fire for his policies in Minnesota, including one in which he helped make menstruation products available for all students who could experience it. The right has responded by dubbing the governor "Tampon Tim."

But that attack is a good thing, and shows the insecurity of those who use it, according to USA Today writer Sara Pequeño.

"I can't believe this is what conservatives are going with," Pequeño wrote Saturday. "They're further stigmatizing menstruation by acting like it's inappropriate for teenage boys to know what a tampon looks like."

Pequeño went on to argue that "It’s the kind of insult that makes the entire GOP look foolish and immature."

"Honestly, I'm not sure they realize it's a compliment," Pequeño then added.

"The language in the Minnesota law is purposefully broad so that trans students would be included," she writes. "Bill author Rep. Sandra Feist said she heard from actual transgender students who asked for the language to be inclusionary."

Pequeño continues:

"Because the law dared to acknowledge that trans people exist, conservatives have lost their minds over it. Trump campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt brought the law up on Fox News, calling it a 'radical' policy and a 'threat to (women’s) health.'"

She added that it's "pretty ridiculous, considering it’s something that affects nearly 2 billion people worldwide each month. The level of insecurity is staggering."
