South Africa Takes Charge: Maharaj and Rabada’s Stellar Performances on Day 4
Rain on Saturday disrupted the first Test between West Indies and South Africa in Trinidad, making play in the late afternoon hours extremely limited.
In spite of the disruptions, South Africa ended the day with a commanding advantage of 154 runs.
357 runs were scored by South Africa in their opening innings. The West Indies were down 124 runs before play resumed, and they were eventually bowled out for 233.
The South African bowlers, especially Keshav Maharaj and Kagiso Rabada, were efficient in limiting the West Indies’ runs and taking wickets.
At the end of play, South Africa had reached 30-O after taking a solid start to their second innings. Aiden Markram was on nine while Tony de Zorzi, who was dropped in the final over, was still undefeated at 14.
Temba Bavuma, the captain of South Africa, stated that his side plans to immediately increase their lead and then pursue a victory by bowling out the West Indies once more on the last day of play.
“Hopefully, we will get a full day’s play to give us a realistic chance of getting a result, ” he said.
“It’s an old cliche but we are going to have to take care of that first hour and try and stretch our lead and if that works out we can throw caution to the wind and go for it.”
Play on the first day of the match was restricted to just 15 overs due to inclement weather on Wednesday. The third day, Friday, also had several delays because of the rain that didn’t stop. Unfortunately, Sunday’s forecast indicates that further rain is likely to fall.
The West Indies and South Africa are presently playing a two-Test series, with the first game being impacted by the bad weather. The second and final Test, which is slated to start on Thursday of next week, will take place in Georgetown, Guyana.
