Two arrested after icon stolen from church

Police arrested two people on Sunday after a valuable icon was stolen from the Apostolos Andreas church on Kyrenia Avenue in Platy Aglandjias, Nicosia.

Police received a report on Saturday when worshippers noticed an icon of the Virgin Mary, which had gold in places, was missing.

According to the complaint, icon went missing between August 15 and 17.

CID officers investigating the case initially discovered the car that had been used for the theft and then the two people who had used it. The car had been reported stolen from Acropolis.

Their investigations led them to two people who live in the village of Pera Chorio, aged 44 and 53.

They were arrested on Sunday and are expected to appear before Nicosia district court on Monday for a remand hearing.
