Pundit backs Postecoglou to end Tottenham’s trophy drought this season

Mark Lawrenson has backed Ange Postecoglou to guide Tottenham to the Carabao Cup trophy this season, thus breaking the club’s trophy drought.

Tottenham haven’t won a trophy since 2008

The Carabao Cup was the last trophy Spurs won all the way back in 2008 and despite coming close to winning several major honours in the last 15 years, the Lilywhites have consistently slipped up at the final hurdles.

That is something that Postecoglou is determined to change, telling Men in Blazers earlier this week that success this season will mean lifting trophies.

In fact, most Spurs fans will probably take a Caraoba Cup or an FA Cup win over finishing in the top four during the upcoming season.

Given the strong squad that the Lilywhites are building, they should have a fighting chance of going deep in those competitions even if Postecoglou decides to rotate his squad.

Can Tottenham win the Carabao Cup?

Lawrenson expects Spurs to miss out on a top-four finish again this season but he picked them as his favourites to win the League Cup.

When asked to predict the winners of the Carabao Cup, the pundit told Paddy Power: “Tottenham might be a really good shout here.

“Spurs have always been known as a cup team and I’m not saying that Ange Postecoglou has to win a trophy or he’s out, but he’ll have to have a good run in the league or one of the cups so why not Spurs?.”

A cup win will mean so much more to everyone associated with Tottenham than a top-four finish, which we have had plenty of over the last decade and a half.

Winning the Carabao Cup will take the monkey off the back of the players and give them the confidence that they can go toe-to-toe with the best sides in the country.
