Chiefs drop preseason game No. 2 against Lions

KANSAS CITY, MO. (KSNT) - Though the games do not matter long-term, the Chiefs have yet to win a preseason game in 2024.

Detroit defeated Kansas City 24-23 in preseason game No. 2, the first game in Arrowhead Stadium in the 2024 campaign.

Patrick Mahomes was allowed two drives this week as the Chiefs want to keep him healthy and rested for the regular season. He finished 8-14 for 93 yards passing as both drives stalled in field goal range.

Mahomes did go viral for a behind-the-back pass he pulled off to tight end Travis Kelce.

Quarterback Carson Wentz came in for the rest of the first half, connecting with rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy on a 22-yard touchdown to give Kansas City a 13-0 lead. At the half, the Chiefs led 16-12.

Midway through the fourth quarter, quarterback Chris Oladokun connected with receiver Cornell Powell on a 14-yard pass that Powell took 50 more yards for a 64-yard touchdown. This pushed Kansas City's lead to 23-15.

The Lions then quickly closed the gap to 23-21 following a seven-yard touchdown run from quarterback Hendon Hooker. The Chiefs fumbled and punted on their next two drives, opening the door for the Lions to kick a game-winning field goal as time expired, snagging the one-point victory.

The Chiefs are now 0-2 in the preseason with one game to go, hosting the Bears on Thursday, August 22.
