NYC beaches close due to dangerous rip currents from Tropical Storm Ernesto

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Some New York City beaches are closed Sunday due to dangerous rip currents predicted as an effect of Tropical Storm Ernesto, NYC Parks announced.

All beaches in Brooklyn and Queens, along with Jacob Riis Beach, are closed to swimming. Lifeguards are on duty and patrolling the beaches.

The life-threatening rip currents could cause ocean swells up to 6 feet high, according to officials.

"New Yorkers should know the ocean is more powerful than you are, particularly this weekend. Do not risk your life, or the lives of first responders, by swimming while our beaches are closed," Mayor Eric Adams said in a statement.

NYC Parks enforcement officers are also at beaches to enforce the swimming ban.
