Harbhajan Singh Writes To West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee Over RG Kar Rape-Murder Horror, Urges For Fast Action

New Delhi: Former Indian cricketer and two-time World Cup winner Harbhajan Singh wrote a letter to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, expressing ‘deep anguish’ over the delay in justice for the trainee doctor at the RG Kar who was allegedly raped and murdered on August 9. The heinous crime sparked widespread protests across the country demanding safety for women and justice for the victim.

In the letter addressed to West Bengal CM Banerjee and Governor CV Ananda Bose, and the citizens of India, Harbhajan urged the authorities for ‘justice and introspection’. “This unspeakable act of violence, which shook the conscience of all of us, is not just a heinous crime against one individual but a grave assault on the dignity and safety of every woman in our society.

“It is a reflection of the deeply rooted issues within our society and a blatant reminder of the urgent need for systemic change and action by the authorities,” Harbhajan wrote in a two-page letter shared on his social media accounts. Since August 9, more than two weeks have passed and the whole country has not seen any ‘concrete action’.

“Their (doctors) protests are understood and I wholeheartedly support the medical community in their fight for their cause of justice,” he said. “The medical community is already working in challenging conditions. With such incidents, how can we expect them to perform their duties with dedication when their own safety is so gravely compromised?” the Rajya Sabha MP asked.

Earlier, other Indian cricketers like Jasprit Bumrah, Sourav Ganguly, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammad Siraj, Shreyas Iyer and Washington Sundar also raised their voices for the same. “Don’t tell women to change their path, change the environment. Every woman deserves a safe environment,” the Indian pacer had written on his Instagram story on Independence Day.

However, neither Indian captain Rohit Sharma nor former skipper Virat Kohli has made any comment on the issue.
