Severino Shutout Performance Leads Mets in 4-0 Win

Luis Severino has been one of the feel-good stories overall for the 2024 New York Mets. A pitcher counted out after a disastrous 2023 with the New York Yankees moved crosstown and given a chance. Severino pitched very well at the beginning of the year but hit a wall over the last several starts. Entering Saturday’s game with the Miami Marlins, Severino needed a good outing, and he not only gave the Mets and their fans a good outing, but he also gave them the best performance by a Mets starter all year that was pure guts, tenacity, and heart. Throwing a shutout as New York beat Miami 4-0.

Luis Severino Shuts Out The Marlins

Simply put, this was a masterful performance by the veteran. It was a throwback to the pitcher he used to be with the Yankees. He was given early run support, and that was all he needed. Severino threw 113 pitches in 9 innings of work with 8 strikeouts in the shutout. He located exceptionally well and threw harder as the game went on. The fans got into it right around the 7th and 8th innings. It looked like Edwin Díaz would go in for the 9th, and Severino’s day looked to be done. However, manager Carlos Mendoza trusted Severino to finish this game after speaking to him in the dugout.

In the 9th, Severino hit Jake Burger on the first pitch, and Mendoza, after speaking to him on the mound, trusted him again to finish the job. A strikeout, a pop-out, and a strikeout secured the shutout win and a memorable performance for Severino as the crowd chanted his name. It was a tremendous outing that Severino desperately needed to get his season back on track.

Offense Has Another Good Day

Meanwhile, the offense continues to hit after a nightmare series in Seattle. Francisco Lindor started things with a leadoff home run in the 1st inning. In the 2nd inning, Pete Alonso notched a towering solo home run. Jesse Winker hit an RBI single in the 3rd inning, and Mark Vientos doubled home Lindor in the 4th inning. The offense gave Severino a 4-0 lead, and Severino took care of the rest.

Player Of The Game: Luis Severino

Severino had his best day as a Met, and it was one to remember in this 2024 Mets season.

On Deck:

Paul Blackburn looks to bounce back on Sunday after a rough outing in his last start. He’ll be contested by Valente Bellozo of the Marlins. The game will be televised nationally on Roku at 12:05 p.m. EDT and broadcast on WCBS 880.
