Mariners Game Preview #125, 8/18/24: SEA @ PIT

Lon Horwedel-USA TODAY Sports

Last East Coast game of the year!

It’s been one week since the Mariners’ dismantling of the Mets on Sunday Night Baseball, and if you ask any Mariners fan, that feels like at least a month ago at this point. Having already dropped the series to the Pirates, they’ll look to avoid a second consecutive sweep before heading to Los Angeles.

Lineups:

Randy Arozarena and Dylan Moore get the day off after combining for nine (!!!) strikeouts yesterday, and George Kirby will look to flush his nightmarish last outing in Detroit. For the Pirates, they’ll be running out a similar lineup to yesterday’s tilt, with Bryan Reynolds slotting into the DH spot. Righty Jake Woodford will get the start in Marco Gonzales’s place, and he’s coming off a six-inning, one-run performance against the Padres. His command since joining Pittsburgh has been strong, not walking a soul through 14.2 innings, so the M’s bats should do their best to pounce on pitches in the zone. We’ll see, though!

Game Info:

Today’s first pitch is at 10:35am, the final East Coast breakfast game of the year. You’ll be able to follow the action in all the usual spots - Dave Sims and Mike Blowers will call the game on ROOT Sports NW, while Rick Rizzs and Gary Hill Jr. will be broadcasting on 710 AM Seattle Sports.

This day in Mariners History:

2023: The Mariners beat the Astros 2-0 in Houston despite going 0-for-17 with runners in scoring position. Solo shots from Julio Rodríguez and Mike Ford were the difference makers.

2014: Hisashi Iwakuma tossed eight scoreless innings with eleven strikeouts en route to a 5-2 win over the Phillies.

2001: Mike Cameron went 4-for-4 with a pair of homers and eight runs batted in in a 10-2 trouncing of the Yankees.
