Nearly 200 lives lost in recent natural disasters across Pakistan

Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has announced that 195 people have lost their lives, and hundreds more have been injured during the heavy rains and floods that have struck the country over the past month and a half.

On Sunday, August 18, the NDMA released a report stating that between July 1 and August 18 of this year, 2,293 homes were either completely or partially destroyed, and 352 livestock were lost due to the flooding.

According to the NDMA, the fatalities were caused by building collapses, lightning strikes, and drowning in the floodwaters.

The report highlighted that the provinces of Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa experienced the highest casualties, with 139 deaths and 322 injuries recorded in these two regions.

Simultaneously, Pakistani media reported that 11 more people have died following severe rains and flooding in the country.

The recent monsoon rains and floods have led to significant loss of life and extensive property damage across various regions of Pakistan. These recurring natural disasters underscore the urgent need for enhanced infrastructure, better disaster preparedness, and effective response strategies to mitigate the impact on affected communities.

As climate change exacerbates weather extremes, Pakistan faces increasing challenges in managing and recovering from such events. The ongoing humanitarian crisis calls for immediate national and international efforts to support those affected and to build resilience against future disasters.
