Who is Darwin Nunez?

Darwin Nunez is a Premier League footballer from Uruguay.

He was born on June 24, 1999, in Artigas, Uruguay, and now lives in the UK after signing for Liverpool in 2022.

Nunez played for local clubs La Luz and San Miguel before being scouted when he was 14.

He moved to Uruguay’s capital Montevideo but soon became homesick.

He returned to his hometown but didn’t give up on his football dream.

Nunez began his career at Peñarol, before signing for Spanish club Almeria at the age of 20.

After just one season at the club, he joined Portuguese side, Benfica.
Nunez is in a relationship with Lorena Manas and the pair announced the birth of their son, Darin, in January 2022.

What is Darwin Nunez’s goal celebration and what does it mean?

Nunez, like other footballers, has his own unique celebration.

When he scores, the star looks at the camera before making a love heart symbol and pointing at a tattoo on his arm.

He then kisses the tattoo in tribute to his partner and their child.

The tattoo on his right forearm is one of his son as a baby.

Nunez is known for his distinctive tattoos which all seem to have a deep meaning to the player.

He has the word family written across his chest along with a lion on his back as well as another on his arm.

How many goals has Darwin Nunez scored for Liverpool?

Nunez plays as a forward for Premier League club Liverpool.

A deal was reached for the club to buy Nunez in June 2022.

The transfer was a record deal at the time which was £85million.

Nunez won Carabao Cup with Liverpool in 2024 and Community Shield in 2022 – in which he scored his first goal for the club.

For Liverpool, Nunez has scored 20 goals across two seasons.

He also plays for the Uruguay national team.

As of August 2024, he has 29 caps and 13 goals for his country.

Crimes and punishments

Other players have had the book thrown at them for making crude gestures. Here's a list of some of the most famous offenders...

Dele Alli was banned for one match by Fifa and fined £3,500 for raising his middle finger in a World Cup qualifier against… SLOVAKIA… in 2017. He claimed it was just a friendly joke aimed at Kyle Walker.

Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone was slapped with a £17,000 fine for improper conduct for his bizarre crotch-grabbing celebration against Juventus in a Champions League first leg tie in 2019.

Then-Juventus star Cristiano Ronaldo then repeated the act when he scored against Atletico in the return leg and was hit with an identical fine. He escaped a ban though.

Montpellier coach Rene Girard was hit with a one-match European ban and fined £4,000 for raising his finger to opposite number Huub Stevens at the end of a 2012 Champions League clash against Schalke 04.
