Tottenham signed Solanke for £65m

It is fair to say that Spurs’ signing of Solanke has split opinion in the footballing world, with not everyone convinced that it is money well spelt.

The critics of the signing point to the fact that the 26-year-old has had only one great season at the highest level, with his overall Premier League record being uninspiring.

However, not only does the Englishman boost Tottenham’s homegrown numbers but he is also evidently a good tactical fit for the Lilywhites, with the newcomer being one of the best-pressing strikers in the league.

Postecoglou has the final say on transfers

Postecoglou admitted that Solanke was exactly the kind of player he wanted to lead the line for his side this season.

When asked if the former Cherries star’s performance against Spurs last season played a key role in his decision to bring the centre-forward through the door, the Tottenham boss told Football.London: “Well, my role in all the signings is pretty small. I just made the decision, mate. So, I’m the one that says yes or no. They’re here because I want them here and Dom certainly fits that boat.

“But no there wasn’t one performance. I mean yeah I thought he did well against us and he gave us some real problems that a lot of strikers in the league didn’t in his mobility. His movement was really impressive. There’s no secret we love to press and he’s got a great work ethic and he scores goals.

“He is a presence and scores different types of goals. I think the way we play suits him and I really liked where he was in his career. I am a big one on understanding the person, the person’s motivation and he was obviously an outstanding young player.”

Postecoglou also remarked that the new Tottenham signing has proven that he has a great mentality he has by fighting his way back to the top after facing adversity in the early stages of his career.

The Australian continued: “He got to some big clubs, but it never worked out for him and it’s what you do in that scenario. Do you think ‘it’ll never happen for me’ or do you work your way back and he’s done remarkably well to get himself into a position where he scored 19 goals in the Premier League last year, which we all know is a fair feat and he’s got himself back to a big club. I love that aspect because I know he has the right sort of mentality.

“It was a whole range of things that meant I was really keen to bring him in. Sometimes these things are about timing and I thought it was a good time for him, but also a good time for us to bring him in because we have a really young group. He’s one that is proven at the Premier League level and he improves us.”

Spurs Web Opinion
