Ange Postecoglou says Tottenham allowed their game plan to be disrupted too many times by the opposition last season, admitting that it is an area they need to improve significantly.

Tottenham finished fifth under Ange last season

While Postecoglou’s first season in charge at Spurs was essentially a free hit as he was walking into Hotspur Way at a tumultuous time, there is a lot more pressure on him going into this season.

The Australian has had a chance to put his own imprint on the squad this summer and he will be expected to deliver a top-four finish.

There were some question marks raised about Postecoglou’s tactics towards the end of last season and critics will only get louder if the Lilywhites do not make a good start to the new campaign.

Spurs need to stick to their game plan

The 58-year-old confessed that Spurs veered off their game plan too many times last season due to the disruptive tactics of the opposition sides, insisting that his players have to get better at sticking to their approach for 90 minutes.

When asked which specific aspects of Tottenham’s game needs polishing, the Spurs boss told Sky Sports: “I think in all aspects. The first thing is, have I got a group of players who believe in what we’re trying to do? I really do believe that. That’s the first part of any sort of process. We’ve bought into the way we want to play because it’s challenging.

“You’ve got to be brave. You’ve got to be able to do things a little bit differently, positionally, or in the way we approach games. You’ve got to have an open mind about that. The first year is about trying to get people to believe in that.

“Probably because we got off to such a great start, that there wasn’t too much resistance. The players bought into it, they enjoyed it and they wanted more of it. But now it’s about doing that on a more consistent basis and not allowing, whether that’s oppositions or outside influences, to take us off the road we’re on.

“I thought it happened too often last year where there was an opposition tactic, or something we did self-inflicted – whether that was a lack of discipline or we had injuries and we had to shuffle the team around. We didn’t stay as consistent in our approach.

“But I think for the most part, the players still tried to do what we wanted them to do. Hopefully, we execute better.”

It sounds like Postecoglou is saying that Tottenham have to get better at implementing Plan A rather than being worried about coming up with a Plan B or Plan C.

Coaches across the Premier League now know the weaknesses of Ange’s system, which is why his second season at Spurs will be a major acid test for his principles.
