Limassol delivery drivers working only until 8pm

Delivery drivers were partially resuming work in Limassol but only until 8pm on Monday, as part of their plea to end racist attacks against them.

They said the assaults in the city they have been subject to have been ongoing for the past year but spiked in the past month.

Wolt delivery service issued a statement on Saturday condemning the incidents, saying they appeared to have a racist undertone.

It said it had been in contact with authorities for the past year when the problem appeared to surface.

Police previously told the Cyprus Mail it was aware of the allegations.

A minor has already been arrested, deputy Limassol police spokesman Marinos Vasiliou said and officers were searching for another two individuals.

“Everyone is afraid to do their job,” delivery driver Rajesh told the Cyprus Mail. He described it “an everyday occurrence” for drivers to be ambushed, robbed and humiliated by groups of people.

“We’ve had eggs thrown at us, glass bottles smashed on our helmets, our bikes stolen. We can’t continue like this.”

Wolt condemned any form of violence and urged victims of racist attacks to contact its 24-hour service line for support.
