Cyprus Greens formally oppose Mathiatis-Lythrodontas PV plant

The Green party has filed a formal objection to a massive photovoltaic plant proposed for the Mathiatis-Analyontas-Lythrodontas triangle, in the Nicosia district.

In a press release announcing the action, the party calls on all ecologically aware people to submit their own objection and not let this important natural habitat be destroyed in the name of private interests.

Anyone wishing to add their name to the list of opposers can do so on the Environment Department’s website here until August 24.

In their objection, the ecologists say that the project will cause serious and irreversible damage to the environment.

The ecologists speak about an effort to “conceal” the impact with “false and misleading information”.

“In reality, the specific area is an important habitat, which is home to dozens of species of birds, some of which are protected, at least one habitat protected by the European directive on habitats and is adjacent to two Natura 2000 areas, considered by the ministry of agriculture to be of high natural value.”

The ecologists add that there have been many mistakes and omissions in the study to evaluate the impact on the environment, which intensify the general sense of untrustworthiness.

They also say that the position of the Audit Office must be taken into account regarding the illegal manner in which state land was allocated, as explained in a letter to the interior minister in September 2021.

The ecologists’ objection has been forwarded to the ministers of agriculture, energy and interior, the forestry department, the local authorities, the complex of Machairas communities, the environment commissioner, the parliamentary environment committee, the federation of environmental organisations, the group for the protection of the natural and cultural heritage of Mathiatis and other environmental groups.
