Buffalo man arrested in Utica burglary

UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) -- A Buffalo man has been arrested on burglary charges after being seen carrying an ATM in a garbage bin in Utica, according to police.

Police were called to Steuben Park for an investigation regarding a hatchet. Upon their arrival, they were directed to a residence in the park where the suspect had fled. Officers traveled to the residence, where they located the individual -- later identified as 42-year-old John Coronado of Buffalo -- who matched the description.

As officers spoke with other individuals in the area, they learned that earlier in the day, witnesses saw Coronado allegedly walking down the street with a large garbage bin. Witnesses say that within the bin were various liquor bottles and an ATM.

Officers then began an investigation and a canvas of local businesses. Upon checking the Lotus Garden on King Street, officers noticed several broken windows in the storefront. Officers then made contact with the owners, who confirmed that an ATM and several liquor bottles were taken during the burglary.

The case was assigned to the Utica Police Department's Criminal Investigation Unit, and after obtaining more evidence, police arrested Coronado.

The victim who made the original menacing complaint did not wish to pursue charges.

Coronado was ultimately charged with:

  • third-degree Burglary, a Class D Felony,
  • fourth-degree Criminal Mischief, a Class A Misdemeanor, and
  • Petit Larceny, a Class A Misdemeanor.
